This 12-week course will guide students through the spiritual and practical dimensions of Salah, the central act of worship in Islam. Each week, we will explore the deeper meanings, intentions, and physical elements of Salah, equipping students with both understanding and motivation to enhance their prayer experience.
By the end of the course, participants will have a profound connection to Salah, understanding it as a transformative act that nurtures their spiritual, mental, and physical wellbeing.
Course Outline:
Week 1: The Essence and Purpose of Salah
Explore the meaning of Salah, its place in our lives, and its role in spiritual development. This session will set the stage for our journey into the inner and outer dimensions of prayer.
Week 2: Niyyah (Intention): Setting the Stage for Worship
Delve into the concept of niyyah and the significance of consciously setting our intentions. Understand how to prepare the heart and mind for a sincere connection with Allah.
Week 3: Physical Preparation and Cleanliness
Discuss the physical requirements for Salah, including wudu (ablution), dress, and the cleanliness of the praying space. Explore how these outer aspects reflect inner purification.
Week 4: Takbir and Entering Allah’s Presence
Examine the meaning and impact of the opening takbir (saying “Allahu Akbar”). Learn how to transition from the outer world into a state of mindfulness and focus.
Week 5: The Standing (Qiyam) and Opening Chapter (Al-Fatihah)
Understand the significance of standing before Allah in humility and reverence. Study Al-Fatihah and how its words serve as a dialogue between the worshiper and the Creator.
Week 6: Ruku (Bowing) – Humbling the Self
Reflect on the posture of bowing and its symbolism in surrendering one’s ego. Learn how to cultivate gratitude and awe through this act of humility.
Week 7: Sujud (Prostration) – The Height of Submission
Dive into the spiritual depth of prostration, the closest a servant can be to Allah. Discover how to express full submission and connect to the deeper layers of sujud.
Week 8: Tashahhud – The Testimony of Faith in Prayer
Focus on the sitting position and recitation of the tashahhud, reaffirming one’s faith and connection to Allah, the Prophet Muhammad, and the righteous.
Week 9: Salawat upon the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him)
Examine the significance of sending peace and blessings upon the Prophet (PBUH) within Salah, cultivating love and connection to the prophetic example.
Week 10: Concluding the Prayer – Tasleem and After-Prayer Reflection
Explore the closing aspects of Salah, with emphasis on the tasleem (greeting of peace) and remaining in a state of remembrance and mindfulness after prayer.
Week 11: The Spiritual Impact of Salah on Daily Life
Reflect on how regular, mindful Salah can transform daily routines, foster patience, and increase reliance on Allah. Discuss practical ways to carry the peace and discipline of Salah into one’s life.
Week 12: Building a Lifelong Relationship with Salah
Summarize the course and encourage lifelong growth in Salah. Discuss the importance of consistency, overcoming common obstacles, and fostering a deeper, evolving connection with this essential act of worship.

Teacher: Mualima Zaitoon Ebrahim
Born and raised in Cape Town, Zaitoon Ebrahim is a motivational speaker, artist, mom of 2 boys, and author. She obtained bachelor’s degree in Islamic Theology at Islamic College of Southern Africa and started her career as an Islamic studies educator at Madrassatul Quds. During this time, she managed youth events with an NGO, facilitating events, camps, and leadership training for adults and youth. Being involved with the youth, she also co-presented on radio Voice of the Cape for one year on the show, ‘For Young Individuals. The key focus of this programme was to educate young individuals about entrepreneurship and personal growth.
In addition to this, she obtained a Diploma in Project Management, a diploma in Didactics, and certification in Life Coaching, Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and Therapeutic Art Coaching.
